Abstract

Where Calluna was recolonizing burnt ground, the rate of soil erosion correlated negatively with the height and density of the vegetation. Where the Calluna cover was complete, soil loss was very small compared to litter accumulation. Gully development on Calluna moorland was considered to occur in response to wetter soil conditions brought about by moor burning.
