NatureScot Research Report 1363 - Exploring engagement with Dundee Wee Forests and green spaces.
Abstract
This report explores how Dundee schools and medical practices engage with Wee Forests-small, biodiverse woodlands planted under the national Wee Forest programme-and local green spaces. It examines the accessibility of these spaces to primary schools, with findings showing that a majority of schools are within a 20-25 minute walk of local green spaces, while fewer schools have direct access to a Wee Forest. The report highlights how these spaces are used, with green spaces mainly serving physical activities and wellbeing, while Wee Forests are more focused on educational activities related to biodiversity. It also identifies barriers to engagement, such as time, resources, and transportation, and emphasizes the importance of community networks that support environmental and social initiatives, including gardening and food-sharing activities.
