Evidence to policy
‘What is the value of monitoring, evidence, data and science for nature conservation outcomes?’
Thursday 18 February 2021
09:00 UK time / 19:00 Australian Eastern time
Chair
Dr Florencia Yannelli, Freie Universität Berlin
Speaker
Professor Hugh Possingham, Queensland Chief Scientist
About the workshop
Most conservation scientists were trained in ecology (although that is changing rapidly) and as ecologists, we were trained to pose and test null hypotheses about how ecological systems work. But has this training served us well for gathering the most important information for delivering conservation outcomes?
I will discuss different aspects of data, science, and evidence, how it can be used for conservation, and argue that maybe the most interesting ecological questions are not always the data that will make the biggest difference on the ground.
