MEE Live! Using the pannotator R package for rapid ecological data collection from 360-degree images
High-resolution 360-degree cameras now offer a transformative solution for efficiently capturing and extracting macroscopic ecological and biogeographical data from field surveys. In this workshop we will demonstrate how to rapidly collect 360-degree images using an inexpensive GoPro Max camera and then extract high-quality data from these images using the new pannotator package, a customisable R ‘shiny’ app that allows immersive visualisation, mapping, and annotation of panospheric imagery. There are numerous downstream applications for data extracted from georeferenced 360-degree imagery, and in this workshop we will provide use cases in plant demography, tree health research and landscape-scale geospatial modelling, and also discuss future applications in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) – based object detection and image classification.
